Not one, not two, but three local companies have made Fortune magazine’s list of “World’s Most Admired Companies.”
Simon Property Group Inc., WellPoint Inc. and Brightpoint Inc. of Indianapolis, and Cummins Inc., of Columbus, made the list.
Of the 57 industries studied, 22 are led by new companies this year, the largest proportion ever. The changed order of the business world is particularly evident from another perspective — our respondents’ views about who are the best at critical business abilities. The recession changed global opinion thoroughly.
How did the new class of champions do it? The answer, distilled from the stories of dozens of companies in varied industries worldwide, is that through good times and bad they dared to differ from how most competitors were behaving.
Are there any lessons to be learned from this? The recession, as the article points out, obviously changed how business is done around the world. The companies that have made the list tend to be the ones that weathered the hard times.
